The TARDIS is set to materialize onto the Disney+ streaming service late 2023 with brand new episodes featuring David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor (yes, you read that correctly), Catherine Tate as Donna Noble, and Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor (yes, you read that correctly too). While in the UK ‘Doctor Who’ will remain strictly a BBC title, internationally new episodes will be broadcast to the Disney+ streamer.
This comes as a huge surprise to many who’ve never dreamed a distribution deal between Disney and the BBC could be in the cards, following the exclusive streaming deal the BBC previously signed with WarnerMedia and HBO Max. Currently all 13 seasons of NuWho can be streamed on HBO Max. It isn’t certain whether or not Disney+ will get the streaming rights for past episodes immediately alongside the new episodes, if they’ll get them down the line, or if HBO Max will retain its exclusive streaming rights to the past episodes for the foreseeable future.
Whatever the case may be, this is a massive score for Disney+ as sole distributor of streaming the show’s 60th anniversary. The anniversary is said to be split into 3 specials, all arriving in November 2023. It follows that these specials will mark the start of Disney+’s unique streaming partnership with the BBC. Russell T. Davies, who shepherded the show’s revival in 2005, is back onboard as showrunner, and the three specials will be directed by Rachel Talalay, Tom Kingsley, and Chanya Button.

Ever since the show left Netflix in 2016, it’s popularity has dropped off immensely, and HBO Max has done little to promote the series amidst its own programming, causing the show’s viewership to stagnate. The series peaked in 2013, the year of the show’s 50th anniversary, so this deal, if successful, should bring new life to the series, and hopefully bring back old viewers.
Alongside the announcement came the reveal of a brand new and yet strikingly classic logo for the series, one that harkens back to the Tom Baker era. And to answer some of your lingering questions about the show, Ncuti Gatwa, the Fifteenth Doctor has begun his press tour as the new (well, one of the new) Doctors.
