Tim’s Take: “Star Wars - The Force Unleashed”

On this site, I haven’t discussed my absolute enthusiasm for the upcoming game, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.

What do i think about the game?

Now, I will be the first to tell you I am a huge Star Wars fan. Now, for fans out there, I have not been able to immerse myself in the Expanded Universe too much. Don’t get me wrong; I loved the Thrawn trilogy and constantly revisit it from time to time. But I have been trying to get caught up in the Legacy of the Force and have not been successful. Anyways, I digress . . .

I am more partial to the Star Wars stories that kind of expand the universe that is within the movies, if you catch my drift. Stories like the Clone Wars series, Clone Wars novels, and the movie novelizations. That being said, I am TOTALLY excited for the Force Unleashed. It looks to be an awesome game to expand the universe of the movies a bit more.

I must say before I continue, I will admit I am not a gamer. I will not usually play a video game unless the subject material of the game interests me. As I’ve said, this game is Star Wars, so naturally I’m gonna play it. The gameplay looks awesome, and that kind of intrigues me a bit.

Now there have been Star Wars games before. What makes this one so much different? I think the story makes it different. I think Darth Vader having a Secret Apprentice is genius writing. I think it shows the eroding relationship between Vader and Palpatine that will explode in Return of the Jedi.

We also see the somewhat father-son relationship develop between the Secret Apprentice and Vader. We kind of see what would’ve been had Vader trained Luke in the ways of the Sith. We would’ve seen Vader push his son to the limit, as he does the Secret Apprentice in the game. So that will be interesting to see . . .

I think that is what will be the most interesting in this game is the characters and how it deepens and expands the Star Wars universe, and connects the two trilogies together. I would like to see more of these kind of stories in mainstream Star Wars in the near future . . .

Another thing I am looking forward to about this game is the outside media this game is participating in. Lucas has already released toys such as the Secret Apprentice’s lightsaber, and his Ship (that I can’t recall off the top of my head). Not only that, is there will be a companion novel and a graphic novel to this game, which will further expand the mythos of Star Wars to a great extent.

Now something with this much outside media promotion has not been seen since Shadows of the Empire. Most Star Wars fans remember Shadows of the Empire as being a huge game, prior to its release. It was the game that connected that unfilled storyblock in between the Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. It connected perfectly and was an awesome play. The book and comics were awesome reads as well, and served as great companions to this wonderful game.

I think that this Force Unleashed game will be on that kind of par. It will be the Star Wars game that people will be talking about for many years to come.

Now I have only scratched the surface on this game,I know. But that is due to the fact that the game has not been released yet and we still have to wait a few months before it is finally released. But the excitement is still there. I personally can’t wait to get my hands on this game and immerse myself once again in the Star Wars universe.
